Sonata is a crossbreed variety (Elsanta x Polka) from the breeding program of Fresh Forward.
The ripening process is about 1 – 3 days after the one of Elsanta. The variety convinces with producing large, firm and attractively shaped fruits.
The fruit is glossy and medium-red all over, without any green tips. The flavor is excellent.
Yet another advantage over Elsanta is the consistently uniform shape, with no misshaped fruits!
The yield of this variety is good and picking is easy. The plant is robust yet susceptible to Phytophthora cactorum, which must be considered in the plant protection scheme. Sonata is sensitive to heat.
Prematuring the plant with foil or fleece is possible but won’t bring the same effect as with for example Elsanta.
Later cultivation with straw is an option too. Sonata is the ideal A+ or waiting bed plant material for 60-day culture.
These positive characteristics have made Sonata a major mid-season variety over the last few years.
